Car Parts – FAQ

Where Can I Find Mercedes-Benz Auto Parts in Charlottesville, Virginia?

There may be many times in which you may need or want to buy new auto parts for your car or SUV. To help you choose, we asked our automotive service and parts gurus a few frequently asked questions. Here’s is what they said.

Vehicle Parts Questions

Should I Buy OEM Parts?

OEM auto parts are the “Original Equipment Manufacturer” parts. They are created for unique car models by the manufacturer. These are your vehicle’s exact-matching parts. They come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Auto Dealers use your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to find the correct part for your car or SUV.

  • Quality:

  • These manufacturer parts guarantee quality and performance.

  • Warranty:

  • These automobiles parts come with a manufacturer warranty.

  • Price:

  • OEM top of the line auto parts can cost more than comparable aftermarket products.

  • Availability:

  • Parts Centers generally order certain parts from the manufacturer. This may take a few days if it is not already in stock.

Should I Order Aftermarket Car Parts?

An aftermarket part is any car, SUV, or minivan part that is not sourced directly from the vehicle’s maker, or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). These automotive parts may be less-expensive options for your vehicle’s repair and upgrade. Local, independent shops and online retailers can (though not necessarily) offer a selection of aftermarket automotive parts. These car parts are created to function similarly to the OEM versions. However, aftermarket car parts have their own pros and cons.

  • Quality:

  • Low prices often signal a lack of quality

  • Warranty:

  • Aftermarket parts are not warrantied

  • Price:

  • These automobile parts are cheaper than the manufacturer/OEM parts

  • Availability:

  • These parts are readily available at most independent car-repair shops

Which Car Parts Are The Most Costly to Repair?

While basic automotive part costs range between $150 to $500, some part repairs can actually break an average typical budget.

The automobile parts most costly to service are:

  • Hybrid batteries – $6,000 and up
  • Cylinders – Up to $10,000
  • Transmission – $4,000 to $5,000
  • Suspensions – Up to $3,000
  • Brake Line – $1,000

When Should You Request OEM Parts?

Always purchase OEM Manufacturer parts for collision repairs. Aftermarket car repair products may not fit securely when your car or SUV has damaged body panels after the crash. Plus, installing aftermarket parts may void your leasing vehicle warranty. So, always use manufacturer parts for all lease vehicle repairs.

Which Vehicle Parts Are Covered/Not Covered Under Warranty?

A complete manufacturer’s warranty doesn’t cover every single part. Car buyers, however, can choose something like a factory warranty, an extended warranty, or bumper-to-bumper for the most comprehensive coverage. Even with an extended warranty, all of your vehicle’s parts will likely not be covered. Check out our coverage overview list below to learn more.

Powertrain Warranty Coverage:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Axles
  • Gaskets
  • Transfer Case

Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty Coverage:

  • High-tech systems
  • All major vehicle systems
  • Safety features
  • AC and heating

Covered By Extended Warranty:

  • Extends coverage of all items under original Factory Warranty

Not Covered Under Warranty

  • Accidental damage
  • Body panel or exterior damage
  • Scheduled maintenance
  • Environmental damage
  • Wear and tear items
  • Interior damage

Is Craigslist a Reliable Place to Buy Auto Parts?

Craigslist is not an auto retailer; but on this online platform, third-party vendors sell automotive parts. For this reason, the quality cannot be guaranteed. If you are buying car parts from this source, make sure to research, verify, and compare before the purchase.

Is Amazon an Okay Place to Get Car Parts

Indisputably, Amazon is a reputed marketplace that provides shoppers with an easy and convenient place to find quality automotive parts. While most automotive parts sold by Amazon are from reliable sources, it can be a challenge for you to know if you’re getting the correct item for your car since you are not dealing with an auto service center directly.

Can You Buy Car Parts at The Auto Dealership?

Yes, you can always buy auto parts at the dealership. Most car dealerships only offer standard OEM manufacturer parts. Best of all, they can use your vehicle identification number to find the correct part for your car or SUV.

Can You Bring Your Own Parts to The Car Dealership?

You can always bring your own auto parts to a auto dealer. The car dealer, however, will not be able to issue warranty on the purchased part, nor will they be able to guarantee its performance. It is highly recommended to get your vehicle checked by an experienced service technician at a local dealer before buying any parts for installation. The certified mechanic will also be able to diagnose the actual problem and order an appropriate replacement part, if necessary.

Where Can I Buy Aftermarket Car Parts Installed?

Bring your aftermarket vehicle part to a local car dealer to get it installed. Before installation, a service technician at the service center will check the aftermarket car part to check if it is a match for your car, SUV, or minivan. Even if they install the aftermarket part, however, the auto dealership can only warranty the labor.
