How has the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA exterior changed?
Visually, the vehicle appears to have more pronounced shoulders with coupé-like lines on the windows and aggressive-looking 20-inch wheels set flush with the GLA profile. The overall proportions are revised for shorter overhangs at the front and rear also, and if you take a close look, you will see that the 2021 is a smidge taller too, some 10cm to be exact.
By the way, the revised proportions have had an impact inside the revamped cabin where rear passengers get to enjoy extra room for their elbows, shoulders, and legs. Those sitting in the back can also adjust the 40:20:40-split-folding seats by 5.5 inches and the backrest can be adjusted to a steeper rake to make room for more cargo.
Any changes with the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA drivetrain?
The 2021 GLA lineup starts off with the front-wheel-drive 250 model equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine. It produces 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and is coupled to an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. Also available is an all-wheel-drive system with the GLA 250 4MATIC® model.
Is an AMG® model available?
It sure is! Should you want something with a bit more punch, you can step up to the AMG® GLA 35 model with its 302 hp and 295 lb-ft from a 2.0-liter turbo. It comes exclusively with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox with 4MATIC®. Inside, an AMG® Performance steering wheel in Dinamica microfibre and leather seats with contrasting top-stitching are included.
Outside, AMG®-specific body styling including a roof-mounted spoiler and rear diffuser are all standard. And underneath, an AMG® exhaust system with two round tailpipes, six-piston calipers, AMG® Torque Control, bodyshell stiffening, and speed-sensitive electromechanical steering with AMG®-specific front steering knuckles and rear axle subframe are also part of this potent package.
What technology improvements can I expect?
On-board the GLA, drivers will benefit from active brake assist, turning maneuver, emergency corridor and exit warning functions – the latter alerts the driver to approaching cyclists or vehicles and warns when pedestrians are nearby. The GLA comes with the marque’s intuitive MBUX infotainment system.
Ready for this? The GLA also features the GLS car wash function. With this, the driver can command the exterior mirrors to fold in, the side windows and sliding roof to close, the windscreen wipers turn off, and the front image from the 360° camera is displayed in order to assist when driving into the car wash.
